Liz Truss's Resignation Honours List Sparks Controversy

Former PM Unveils List Amidst Scrutiny of Previous Honours

Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss has sparked controversy with the release of her resignation honours list, which includes individuals who played a role in her short-lived tenure. The list, which typically follows the resignation of a prime minister, has drawn criticism from some who question the appropriateness of certain selections.

Honoured Individuals Questioned

Among those honoured is Truss's former chief of staff, Mark Fullbrook, who is set to receive a knighthood. Fullbrook resigned from his position just two days after Truss took office, following revelations about his past conduct. Critics have argued that his inclusion on the list is inappropriate given the circumstances of his departure.

Also included on the list is former Conservative Party chairman Nadhim Zahawi, who was sacked by Truss for breaching the ministerial code. Zahawi is due to receive a life peerage, which would allow him to sit in the House of Lords.

Honours Decline Reported

At least two individuals have reportedly turned down honours nominations from Truss. They have not publicly disclosed the reasons for their decline, but some speculate that it may be related to the controversies surrounding the list.

The release of the resignation honours list has reopened the debate about the appropriateness of such awards being given to individuals who have served in government. Critics argue that the honours system should not be used to reward political loyalty or to bolster the reputations of outgoing politicians.
